Success Notes of the Day: Chapter 7 Learn from Reflective Thinking

How Successful People Think By John C. Maxwell

“Reflective thinking enables you to distance yourself from the intense emotions of particularly good or bad experiences and see them with fresh eyes…. That process can help a person to stop carrying around a bunch of negative emotional baggage.”

How heavy is your emotional luggage bag?

“Mark Twain said, “We should be careful to get out of an experience all the wisdom that is in it– not like the cat that sits down on a hot stove lid. She will never sit down on a hot stove lid again- and that is well; but also she will never sit down on a cold one anymore.”

Are there some areas in your life that you have made cold hard fast decisions in the past that you have not reassessed that may not be serving you anymore?

For ex. I was hurt by my first boyfriend so now I do not trust any boyfriends?

Or, my office manager embezzled money so now I will do the work myself and not hire someone?

Maybe it’s more subtle like my mom cheated on my dad so I don’t trust women….

“The value you receive from reflecting will depend on the kinds of questions you ask yourself. The better the questions, the more gold you will mine from your thinking.”

When you feel an emotion come up that is not serving you, take a second and reflect where that could be coming from
